Business technology decisions are rarely as simple as choosing the fastest, newest, or most expensive option.

Faster Technology Isn’t Always Better for Business

A faster computer or network sounds like an obvious improvement. But faster at what?

A gaming computer, for example, is designed for demanding graphics and entertainment workloads. A business computer in a law office in Niagara Falls may need something entirely different: reliability, warranty coverage, security features, standardized components, quiet operation, and compatibility with Cosmolex and the latest versions of Word for example.

The same is true of 10 gigabit networking. It can be extremely useful for large file transfers, video production, servers, virtualization, backups, and other demanding workloads. It could be a benefit for a large architectural firm in St Catharines that relies on rendering drawings on a daily basis but installing it simply because it is faster may not make sense. Should Your Business Move Everything to the Cloud?

Moving to the cloud can improve accessibility, resilience, collaboration, and manageability. It can also introduce recurring costs, internet dependency, application limitations, security concerns, and unexpected complexity.

Keeping everything on-site simply because it is familiar is not a business-first decision. Moving everything to the cloud because it is modern is not one either.

Some organizations benefit from going fully cloud-based. Others need local infrastructure. A Welland business running Sage 300 for example will benefit from  an onsite server. Many require a practical combination of both.

More Cybersecurity Products Don’t Always Mean Better Protection

Traditional antivirus is no longer enough for most businesses. Simply adding more security products is not the answer either.

Effective protection may involve managed detection and response, multifactor authentication, access controls, patching, backups, employee practices, email protection, recovery planning, and clear procedures for responding to suspicious activity.

These measures should work together. A collection of overlapping products can increase cost and complexity without fixing the organization’s most important risks. Security can also become so burdensome that employees look for ways around it. Backup Is About Recovery, not Just Storage
